37 rooms and suites with private bath and showers. Heated pool. Breakfast and room tax extra. The 16th-century Bastide de Gordes clings to the cliffs and ramparts of the town; part of it was built into the restored fortifications, part carved from virgin rock. The pool is on a terrace perched at the edge of the world, overlooking the Lubéron. Rooms are spacious and, with their vaulted ceilings, manage to be rustic and luxurious at the same time. After a long ride or hike, the deep bathtubs are heaven for aching muscles. It delivered just what we need after 34 miles on bicycles. The food is exceptional and the wines are supervised by a knowledgeable and passionate sommelier who introduced us to a deep, nutty and local Vin Cuit de Provence – an unusual cooked wine. This spot offers a dramatic, moonlit view of the Lubéron.
